De 2209EKTN9/C3W64F SKF behoort tot de tweerijige zelfinstellende diepgroefkogellagers. Dit lagertype zonder afdichting heeft twee rijen kogels. Een bolvormige loopbaan in de buitenring biedt plaats aan beide kogelrijen. Dankzij deze constructie kan het lager zichzelf instellen. Eventuele scheefstellingen van de as ten opzichte van het lagerhuis hebben zo geen nadelige invloed op de prestaties.

Deze kenmerken maken de 2209EKTN9/C3W64F SKF uiterst geschikt voor toepassingen waar forse uitlijnfouten of asdoorbuigingen een rol kunnen spelen. Daarnaast hebben zelfinstellende lagers de laagste wrijving van alle wentellagers. Ook bij hogere toerentallen is slechts sprake van een beperkte wrijvingswarmte. Deze lagers zijn in staat om hoge radiale belastingen op te vangen. In mindere mate kunnen ze echter ook axiaal belast worden in beide richtingen.
